Woodward Memories Classic Car Show

Royal Oak Historical Museum

Thank you Royal Oak Historical Society for getting everyone in the mood before the Woodward Dream Cruise.  The Historical Society held a Classic Car Show just days prior to the Cruise and it was great fun.

Mac Shack Michigan
It was held at the Royal Oak Farmers Market and they also had a Food truck Rally - YUM!

The cars were awesome, and of course my faves were the pickup trucks.

I hope that they will have this event again next year.
I made a video of the cars and you can also see more pictures on my Pinterest page:   http://www.pinterest.com/mibp3kad/

Woodward Dream Cruise - It's About the Memories

1962 Chevy Impala

There are many reasons why people attend and enjoy the Woodward Dream Cruise, looking at this '62 Chevy Impala brings back great memories of my dad and some great times associated with this car.

1962 Chevy Impala
Ours was gold with red trim and interior.  We didn't have bucket seats and the car was an automatic on the column.  Even back when we owned it I knew it was a classic.

Pickup trucks always make me think of my Uncle Sal, he loved his trucks and I loved riding in them with him.

A classic truck should have a classic dog.  My Uncle Sal would often bring his dog along for the ride.

1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet
This Ford Mustang didn't look like much when I saw it in 'Mustang Alley' on 9 Mile Ferndale during the Woodward Dream Cruise.  Then I looked inside...

Not much of a paint job, but what a story.
Yup - It's All About the Memories!

Classic Never Goes Out of Style

Good Humor Truck at Woodward Dream Cruise

One of the things that I enjoy about the Woodward Dream Cruise is that you see so many classic cars and I realize that what makes them classic is that they never really go out of style.  Many of these classics can only be described as iconic.
Good Humor Ice Cream Truck
Perhaps part of the reason they never go out of style is the memories they invoke.  I was thrilled to see this Good humor Ice cream Truck at the Dream Cruise, so many good childhood memories.

As a child I remember hearing those bells as the truck made its way down the street where I lived.

If we could get mom or dad to say yes, we would rush outside to flag the truck down.
Change Dispenser
I loved the change dispenser the ice cream man wore on his belt and how quickly he could make change with it.
Yup, Classic Never Goes Out of Style.

Cops Cruisin' on Woodward Ave.

Royal Oak Michigan Police - Woodward Dream Cruise

The Royal Oak Police Department was ready for the Woodward Dream Cruise, and so was I (though I think it was a little more fun for me).

Royal Oak Michigan Police - Woodward Dream Cruise

With over 1 million attendees expected, 400 police officers were deployed for the event.  From my 'observation point/s' the crowds appeared orderly - just out to enjoy the beautiful day and the classic cars.

even in dune buggies.

I haven't heard the attendance counts as of yet, nor have I heard if there were any arrests or tickets issued.  Sadly, channel 7 did report that a corvette was stolen in Birmingham.  Hopefully, it will be recovered soon.

World's Longest Yard Sale

Exit for US 127 Interstate 94 Michigan

What is 690 miles long, starts in Michigan and ends in Alabama?  The World's Longest Yard Sale and Professor Kim D was there (at least for a little bit of it).  A nice ride, pretty, rural and relaxing even if you don't find anything to buy.
US 127 Michigan

My mom was on the hunt for Fiestaware.  Yes, I know you can buy it in the stores, but maybe she is looking for discontinued pieces or colors.  I don't know she didn't tell me anything other than to look for Fiestaware, so I look.  I have no idea what I am looking for, but I'll know it when I see it.

Entering Pure Michigan on US 127
We went a little ways into Ohio and then came back to Michigan.  We stopped at one farm that had this beautiful horse named Prince - he even had blue eyes.  The man said I could pet Prince if I wanted to, he said that he was very friendly and liked attention, so both mom and I petted him.  I was now satisfied that the day had been a success if for no other reason than I got to pet a horse.

Prince lives on a farm in Ohio

Mom did buy a couple of small things (no Fiestaware sitings) and I got a watermelon and head of cabbage from a farm stand.  We did see some unusual items for sale.

I might have bought the Subway signs, well if they were subway signs from the NY subway.

Inquiring Minds...Where are All the Bikers Going?

Artesian Wells Sports Tavern Cement City Michigan

I was traveling US 127 and US 12 today looking for all the yard sales (more on that tomorrow), but was a little sidetracked by all the bikers we kept passing on the roads.  I didn't think they were out for the yard sales and they weren't.

We saw loads of bikers coming and going at Artesian Wells Sports Tavern at Junction US 127 and US 12.  But still didn't know what was up.

Volunteer Appreciation at the Detroit Zoo

Detroit Zoo Volunteer Appreciation Party

Volunteering is its own reward, but a party is always nice too.  Tonight the Detroit Zoo thanked their volunteers with an enjoyable party.

Detroit Zoo Volunteer Appreciation Party
This volunteer says thank you to all the staff that helped out and donated their time, talents and raffle prizes.
The theme this year was a great choice, considering all the construction currently underway at the Detroit Zoo; and the food as always was plentiful and good.  Even though I never win the raffles - the prizes are great and highly sought after.  It was fun to walk around a relatively uncrowded zoo (I always see something that makes me smile) and I never tire of it.  The 4-D movies, Rio and Grizzlies were great (who doesn't like to get water squirted in their face) and ending the evening with S'mores at the Fire Pit brings out the kid in us all.  Can't wait for next year's party.  Come join us - VOLUNTEER at the DETROIT ZOO!

Kismet or Coincidence

Detroit Zoo sign

My birthday is August 1 (never mind the year) and the Detroit Zoo opened on August 1, 1928.

Detroit Zoo sign

I was born and raised in New York, yet I end up in Michigan in Royal Oak to be exact.  Where is the Detroit Zoo located?  Royal Oak, of course.  I even worked at the Detroit Zoo when I first moved here, and now I volunteer at the Detroit Zoo.
Is it Kismet or Coincidence?
No matter - I Love the Detroit Zoo.

Swear to Tell the Truth

Do you swear to tell the truth?
Do you swear to tell the truth?  Wonder how many times I've said that in the course of my career as a New York State Court Officer.  More importantly, wonder how many times people actually told the truth.  I remember one Judge telling the litigants, "I know both of you are lying now, I just have to figure out which one is lying the least."
Don't be a Pinocchio - tell the truth!!!
