NY State Police Academy - "Excellence Through Knowledge"

   I will never forget sitting in that class at the New York State Police Academy and hearing Trooper Brown tell us;  

"This is what I do it is NOT who I am."

   I understood exactly what he was saying, Police are all individuals and who they are is as variable as any group of humans. The Police today are black, white, Hispanic, Asian, female, LGBT...  Their personalities are also diverse; likes, dislikes, some work hard, while others are a bit lazy, some are good people, and others not so good.  

The Bottom Line is:  #StopLabeling.

    Trooper Brown's words have stayed with me all these years because they were true.  My immediate thought has also stayed with me all these years. 

 It is what I do because of who I am.

   Like most people who enter Law Enforcement I wanted to help people, I wanted to protect and serve and I believed in justice.  

It is what we do because of who we are.
